Tony Pedregon Qualifies Second After First Day Of Qualifying

Englishtown, NJ, June 18, 2004 - Qualifying got underway today for the NHRA Nationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ. Defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon powered the Quaker State Chevrolet Monte Carlo to an elapsed time of 4.856 seconds at 305.01 mph to position the Dickie Venables tuned Funny Car second after two sessions.

"The weather conditions for the first session weren't good which caused a lot of cars to smoke the tires," said Pedregon. "These cars are temperamental and don't always respond well to extreme humidity. The evening session was better and we were able to take advantage of it. Quaker State allows us to run as hard as we can, and the end result was a god run."

Eric Medlen posted an elapsed time of 4.830 seconds at 317.72 mph to take the top spot. Pedregon's teammate and brother Cruz Pedregon qualified 3rd with an elapsed time of 4.885 seconds at 293.09 mph.

Two more qualifying sessions are scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (ET). Final eliminations will be held on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying coverage on Saturday June 19, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (ET). Television coverage of final eliminations can be seen on Sunday, June 20, from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPN.
