Johnson Jr. Qualifies 16TH At E-Town
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 19, 2004) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. and his blue Skoal RacingSM crew qualified in the No. 16 position Saturday after facing adverse racing conditions at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
The five-time NHRA winner, made his best pass of the weekend on Saturday's first qualifying attempt, recording a run of 5.107 at 296.11. Johnson's 5.107 elapsed time was the fourth quickest of Saturday's opening qualifying session. On his final qualifying pass of the weekend, the Iowa native's Chevy flopper was too aggressive on the hot, slick Raceway Park drag strip and Johnson coasted to a run of 8.863 at 95.11.
"You have to be qualified to have a shot to win the race and we got the car in the field on the third shot," Johnson said. "Now we have as good a shot to win this thing on Sunday, especially the way the race track has been."
Johnson, who reached the semifinals at Raceway Park last May, will match up against No. 1 qualifier Eric Medlen in the first round of Funny Car eliminations. Johnson is 0-1 in his career against Medlen with the one match-up coming at Firebird Int'l Raceway near Phoenix in February.
