ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 18, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. raced to the No. 15 qualifying spot behind the wheel of his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Friday at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Entering Friday's first qualifying run, the Raceway Park quarter mile surpassed 120 degrees creating a slick race track. Johnson drove his Don Prudhomme-owned flopper to a run of 5.685 seconds at 175.07 mph on his opening effort of the weekend. On the second run, Johnson missed an opportunity to move up in the qualifying order when his Chevy Funny Car overpowered the tricky race track and the Iowa native slowed to a run of 6.171 at 166.31.

"We missed an opportunity to make a good lap in the night session," Johnson said. "We have to make the car run during the heat of the day on Saturday. We'll work on our race day setup and try to move up our position as well."

Johnson, a five-time NHRA winner, aims to move up the Funny Car ladder on Saturday afternoon when nitro qualifying continues with sessions at 1 and 4 p.m. (ET).
