KJ Opens Englishtown Qualifying in Second

POWERade championship points leader Kurt Johnson continued his run of consistent performances during Friday's first day of qualifying at the Lucas Oil NHRA Supernationals in Englishtown, making two of quickest and fastest runs in the Pro Stock category. After opening with a third-best 6.646-second, 209.10 mph pass in the afternoon, KJ took advantage of the cooler evening temperatures to cover the quarter-mile in 6.600-seconds with a top speed of 209.36 mph, slotting him second midway through the qualifying procedure.

"We didn't have a bad day today. We had some new things on our ACDelco Cobalt that we tested in Chicago and had shown some promise so we thought we would give them a race to see how they would work. So far, we're pleased with the results. The corrected numbers are good, the track is decent and we were able to get down both lanes under different atmospheric conditions. Now, it's a matter of gathering information to make sure we can use them for the rest of the season.

"Tomorrow we're going to try and get after that No. 1 spot. I think we're capable of running a 6.59 with an 8 or 7 in the early session. It'll be close, but we're just going to dig deep and try and have some fun."
