Team Kalitta eyeing potential records in Englishtown
Englishtown, NJ, May 12, 2003 -- Every so often, the drag racing gods look with favor upon the competitors in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series to grant them near ideal conditions to race in. As the 23-event NHRA tour prepares for its eighth national event of 2003 in Englishtown, NJ this weekend, both fans and competitors alike are surveying the skies over historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. They are hoping, and possibly praying, that the weatherman's predictions meet with the approval of the aforementioned gods to set the stage for what could be a record-setting weekend of racing.
The forecast for Friday through Sunday is calling for high temperatures in the lower 60s and low temperatures in the upper 40s with overcast skies each day. At a track near sea level like Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, these conditions could hold an even greater promise of changing the NHRA records book.
On the surface, Jim Oberhofer, co-crew chief for the Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster driven by Doug Kalitta, is cautiously optimistic about the forecast for the K&N Filters NHRA SuperNationals, but deep down in his tuner's soul he is very excited about the possibilities in Englishtown.
"If the conditions are right, we are going to go after it hard," Oberhofer said. "Old Bridge is a great track with a lot of grip. If the temperatures remain cool and the clouds can keep the sun off of the track, it could be almost perfect. If the weather holds, our Mac Tools dragster could run in the mid-4.4 (second) range. Our race car has tremendous horsepower, so I would not be surprised to see it run a 4.45 (seconds) at well over 330 mph in the right circumstances."
"It's no secret that Connie (Kalitta, crew chief) is aggressive with his tune up, so he may add more highlights to his legendary career this weekend. I guess we will just have to wait and see what the big, red Mac Tools dragster can do."
