NHRA Top Fueler Dave Grubnic looking for doubly delightful event in Englishtown
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J., (June 14, 2006) -- This weekend, June 15-18, the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series heads east to the Jersey Shore for the K&N Filters SuperNationals at historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., and NHRA standout and fan-favorite Dave Grubnic, driver of the beautifully decorated pink and black, 8,000 horsepower StriVectin-SD Top Fuel dragster, has two very important things on his mind.
First off, native Australian Grubnic wants to "seal the deal" this year in E-town. At last year's annual event, Grubnic was just one round short of hoisting the title trophy in the winner's circle with a runner-up finish. This year he is looking forward to a possible return to the money round and to avenge last season's disappointment.
"We came so close last year," Grubnic said. "It's tough to lose in the finals. You get so close and then you have to settle for second, but that's also what makes our sport so exciting. Hopefully we'll get back there again this year and we can get that one extra win light."
Grubnic is also very excited about the approximately 150 V.I.P. guests that he and the entire StriVectin-SD team will be hosting and entertaining in the team's extensive track-side hospitality area this weekend.
"With New York being so close, it's a wonderful opportunity for us to invite retail beauty advisors, fashion magazine editors and StriVectin customers from one of the largest cities in the world to come out and see all of the excitement of NHRA drag racing and to see why StriVectin is so supportive of our Kalitta Motorsports team and our series. We always have a blast with our guests and I'm sure this will be no exception."
Grubnic is in 4th place in POWERade championship points (592), 248 points away from the lead.
In early 2004, Grubnic, a 43-year old resident of Ennis, Mont., was hired to drive for Kalitta Motorsports after several years of driving for teams with minimal funding. Since joining Team Kalitta, Grubnic, now in his 12th season as a Top Fuel driver, has posted consecutive top-five championship points finishes. In 2004, he won the lucrative and coveted Budweiser Shootout in Las Vegas, becoming only the fourth driver in the special event's 20-year history to win its $100,000 prize in his first attempt. He also won the prestigious Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., in March of this year.
The K&N Filters SuperNationals begins Friday, June 16, for the Top Fuel class with two qualifying sessions at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (ET). Two more qualifying sessions follow on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The top sixteen qualified cars will race Sunday in final eliminations beginning at 11:00 a.m.
All times and dates subject to change.
The K&N Filters SuperNationals is the 11th of 23 national events in the 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
