MCCLENATHAN IS NO. 5 IN E-TOWN QUALIFYING
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 21, 2008) -- Cory McClenathan qualified the FRAM Top Fuel dragster in No. 5 at the NHRA SuperNationals at historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. His run of 4.542 seconds at 325.92 mph under the lights Friday night qualified him in the top half of the 16-car field for the seventh time in 11 races this season.
He also recorded an opening run of 4.635/316.01 (No. 7) on Friday, as well as passes of 9.570/79.17 (No. 5) and a 4.737/307.79 (No. 5) in the heat of the day on Saturday. His first-round opponent in Sunday's eliminations will be No. 12 qualifier Doug Kalitta.
"Our Friday night sessions have gotten better and better for this FRAM Top Fuel dragster," said McClenathan, who came into the event sixth in the point standings. "(Crew chief) Mike Green and the guys are getting better at reading the track on Friday and coming back with a Friday-night setup that actually carries us through the weekend. We've seen some awfully warm temperatures during the day here, so the Friday-night session means more than you can imagine.
"Keeping that No. 5 spot definitely helped us. It kind of carries you into Sunday," added McClenathan. "We made a couple of runs in the heat today that I thought would be a little bit better. We ran a 4.73 on the last run which isn't bad for the conditions. It was the fourth best of the session.
"We've got Doug Kalitta first round tomorrow and he's a great leaver. I went and had Lasik done to my eyes last Friday to try to help my reaction times and it's done nothing but hurt them so far. From what I understand, it's a deal that comes back after time. My lights have been horrible and Doug Kalitta is excellent at the lights, so I need to keep that in mind tomorrow."
NOTE: Final Funny Car qualifying at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park has been halted following Scott Kalitta's crash which occurred during the first pairing.
