McClenathan Unscathed; 4.516-second Effort Fifth-best

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. -- At the same time Cory McClenathan shut off the motor in the Scott Griffin Motorsports FRAM Top Fuel dragster, the motor exploded in a spectacular fireball Friday in the opening day of qualifying for Sunday's Pro Care Rx SuperNationals at Raceway Park.

"Something just happened in the motor, and it's not abnormal for something like that to happen at that spot," said the veteran driver. The fire briefly burned brightly as McClenathan brought the car to a stop. "Now we just have to chase down the problem. I'm sure Tony (Shortall, assistant crew chief) and the guys will put it together and be ready for Saturday qualifying."

His time of 4.516 seconds at 326.40 mph was fifth quickest. "We were
last going into that session and came out fifth. That was pretty good."

The final two sessions Saturday will set the field for eliminations.
