ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. -- It rained at the race in Bristol, Tenn. It rained two weeks ago in Atlanta. This weekend it rained again at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., at the NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions canceling Friday's second session and delaying Saturday's final two sessions of qualifying.
On his first pass, Cory McClenathan, driver of the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports Top Fuel Dragster, hazed the tires and was only able to muster a pass of 5.756 seconds at a coasting 155.76 mph. With only one run on Friday, McClenathan ended the day in 12th spot.
When qualifying did get underway after a wind-blown rainy Saturday morning, McClenathan had a good run going but had to pedal the throttle and lost valuable time crossing the finish line in 4.713 seconds. This moved the Anaheim driver up six spots with one qualifying session remaining.
In that final session, McClenathan came away with a disappointing pass of 11.181 seconds at 82.20 mph. When qualifying ended, the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports team occupied the eighth qualifying spot and would face Mark Kinsella, from Humble, Texas, in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday. Kinsella qualified ninth with a run of 4.715 seconds at 310.48 mph.
Team owner and partner Rick Henkelman indicated that the 6000 horsepower dragster was down on power but that crew chief Wes Cerny was reviewing all the data and would have the team ready for Sunday's first round of eliminations.
