ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - - When qualifying for the first session of Top Fuel gets underway today at the NHRA Matco Tools SpringNationals at Old Bridge Township Park in Englishtown, N.J., one notable driver will be missing from the field - - Bob Vandergriff, Jr.

Vandergriff, from Cumming, Ga., who has had three consecutive top ten NHRA Winston point standing finishes, has parked his Top Fuel dragster due to lack of a primary sponsor.

“This is a business, not a hobby,” said Vandergriff, runner-up at the second event in Phoenix this season. “We have been able to run the first seven events with support from Haldex, Mac Tools, Speedco and friends. Our associate sponsors have been the fuel of this operation thus far. But we can’t continue without the major sponsor needed to finance a Top Fuel program.

“We continue with negotiations with a primary sponsor as this event unfolds, but to date have not received a firm commitment to proceed. It now looks like the program, if it becomes a done deal, will begin with the 2001 season. We’ll keep everyone posted as events warrant,” continued Vandergriff.

The last time Vandergriff missed an NHRA event was at the start of the 1995 season - - again due to lack of major sponsorship.

“We’ve been in this position before and rebounded. We’ll do the same this time. I’m convinced we’ll come back even stronger,” added the 35-year-old driver.
