COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 23, 2000) -- The 36th annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing will be more than just an exercise in drag racing competition for some members of the Pontiac Motorsports contingency. Included in this year's festivities will be a stop at the Columbus Children's Hospital on Thursday, June 15, beginning at 1 p.m. Signing autographs and visiting with the children and their families will be Cory McClenathan, Tom Martino, Mark Pawuk, Del Worsham, Cristen Powell and Frank Pedregon. The Century 21 Pontiac Firebird will also be on display at the hospital so that the kids can get up close to an NHRA Pro Stock Car, and all of the children will be presented with a gift bag provided by Pontiac and Summit Racing. "I think this is going to be a lot of fun for everyone involved," said Fred Simmonds, GM Motorsports Marketing Manager of Drag Racing. "I know the drivers are looking forward to spending the afternoon at the hospital, and we're pretty certain the kids are going to get a pretty big kick out of it." The Columbus Children's Hospital is one of the nation's recognized pediatric leaders with more than 300 licensed inpatient beds and approximately 11,000 patient admissions each year. Critically ill children are cared for in Children's Hospital's 45-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and more than 30-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Their specialty areas include surgical, neurosciences, rehabilitation, burn, dialysis and bone marrow units. The campus includes a $20-million Children's Research Institute housed in a six-story facility dedicated to the study and treatment of children's diseases. More than 400,000 patient visits are handled each year through the hospital's wide variety of programs and services. In addition to the Columbus Children's Hospital visit, the Central Ohio Pontiac & GMC dealers will be raffling a Simpson Racing helmet for the third straight year, signed by all of Pontiac's NHRA and NASCAR Winston Cup Drivers. At the 1999 Pontiac Excitement Nationals over $7000 was raised for the Children's Hospital Foundation and Team Pontiac hopes to surpass that amount this year. Also to show their support, all of the Pontiac teams at this year's Pontiac Excitement Nationals will be sporting a commemorative 'Children's Hospital' decal on their racecars for the duration of the event. The 36th annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals Presented by Summit Racing at National Trail Raceway in Kirkersville, Ohio, on June 15-18 is the 11th race on the 23-event NHRA Winston Drag Racing Tour.
