JOHNSON JR. PILOTS SKOAL RACINGSM! CHEVY TO NO. 9 POSITION AT MILE-HIGH NATIONALS
MORRISON, Colo. (July 16, 2005) Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the ninth qualifying position Saturday at Bandimere Speedway after recording a qualifying-best effort of 4.945-seconds.
After powering his Skoal Racing Monte Carlo to a 4.945-second E.T. on Friday night under the lights at Bandimere Speedway, the six-time NHRA winner used a tune-up from crew chiefs Mike Green and Johnny West to record the quickest run of Saturday's first qualifying session when the Skoal Racing flopper recorded a run of 5.043 seconds at 296.63 mph. Johnson's Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy dropped a cylinder early in the run on its final pass forcing the veteran driver to lift off the throttle and coast to a 12-second run.
"Saturday's first run was the most important run of the weekend," Johnson said. "We're going to be racing in those conditions, so I was happy to have low E.T. of the round. We're in a good spot. Getting down a hot race track is the key to having a good day on Sunday."
Johnson will battle veteran driver Tony Bartone in the first round of flopper eliminations. Final eliminations of the Mile-High Nationals begin Sunday at noon (MT). Johnson is 1-1 in his career against Bartone.
