MORRISON, Colo. - NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Sergio Recio continued to make steady improvement during qualifying at this weekend's Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver. While Recio and his team did not achieve the kind of numbers they were shooting in qualifying seventh, the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel is still shining, as there is still much room for improvement out of his blown Fontana powered dragster.
Recio, from El Paso, Texas, ran a 5.815 second elapsed time at 241.93 mph to qualify him seventh, but damaged a motor in the process. Even with a new 'bullet,' Recio has confidence that his veteran tuner Ora Vasquez can improve the car's performance.
"In today's second round of qualifying, the car got up against the rev-limiter, but we cured that problem," said Recio. "The car left good, I had a good light [.422], but I just missed the shift point, over revved the motor, and it kicked a rod out. So, there's definitely room to improve on that."
In tomorrow's first round, Recio will face heavy hitter Jeff Wilson. Recio plans to be on his game for Wilson, who has struggled all weekend.
"Wilson has been struggling, but you never know what anyone is going to do," stated Recio. "We're going to step on our car a little bit, I'm going to drive it better, and I'm going to have to be on the tree if I'm going to have a chance to beat him. If we get by him, we're probably going to run Shelly Howard, and she's going to be tough. We're just going to take it one round at a time."
