Park Ridge, Ill. (July 11): As the NHRA Winston Drag Racing series begins its west coast swing, Tony Schumacher and his Exide teammates will continue their defense of the 1999 Top Fuel championship at the Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado July 13-16.
Schumacher is currently only 95 points behind 1997& 1998 Champion, Gary Scelzi and is one of several drivers within striking distance with half of the 2000 season still remaining.
"When we started the year we knew there would be several lead changes during the course of the year," said Schumacher, "the key is to stay in the front pack and not get too far behind."
A year ago, Schumacher was ousted from the 1999 Mile-High Nationals from eventual runner up, Doug Kalitta. The Denver area track is one that teams know they need to bring their best tune-up because of the high altitude and unpredictable weather conditions.
"If you are not on your game here, you can hurt a lot of parts," added Schumacher.
As an added bonus, Schumacher and company will play host to Gates Rubber Company guests and employees over the weekend. Gates Rubber Company's corporate headquarters are located in Denver.
"Gates has been a great supporter of us this year," said Schumacher, "in addition to the car, they sponsor our in-car camera and have brought people to most of the races."
"They are a great partner to have and we would love to give them a win to take back to the office with them."
Qualifying for the Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals is scheduled for Friday, July14 and Saturday, July 15. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, July 16.
