PRO STOCK -- CAMARO Z28

KURT JOHNSON, AC DELCO CAMARO Z28, was defeated in the semifinals by eventual title winner Jeg Coughlin Jr. (7.510/183.71 to 7.514/183.41). Kurt moved into third in Winston Championship points by defeating Jim Yates in the first round of eliminations. Points: Warren Johnson, 980; Jeg Coughlin, 857; Kurt Johnson, 744; Jim Yates 742.

KURT: "We didn't do too bad. We beat the number three guy in points, and beat number six or seven guy in points today, and we moved into third. It could have been a little better -- we both ran 7.51s in the semis (he and Jeg), and if I had been able to get my foot off the clutch, it would have been a lot happier day for the Johnsons. It didn't happen, we're just trying to get used to this Camaro. We kind of had a Band-Aid on there when we won St. Louis, and threw some stuff at it today, a little different combination going into the first round, and it ended up beng the quickest car in the first round, just like it was in the first round in St. Louis. But we'r having troubles spinning tires, and we've got to get it consistent and I need to get comfortable with how the Camaro is going to react. It just hasn't been reacting. We'll get it right. I had a .452 light today, which was the best light I've had in this car driving rounds and eliminations. It's like anything else, everything is so close, it takes time to get everything right. Fine-tuning is what it's all about these days."
