BECKMAN BUOYED BY TEAM'S PERFORMANCE, IS SET FOR MOPAR MILE-HIGH NATS
MORRISON, Colo. (July 21, 2010) - Jack Beckman is buoyed by the performance of the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger team, as well as all the Dodge Charger Funny Car teams under the Don Schumacher Racing umbrella, as the DSR entourage heads to the MOPAR Mile-High Nationals in Morrison, Colo., this weekend.
The California native is fresh from a runner-up finish to his DSR teammate Ron Capps last Sunday in Sonoma, Calif., where his other DSR Funny Car teammate Matt Hagan landed in the semifinals. All three drivers also clinched a berth in the Countdown to 1 playoffs, which begin for the top 10 in points the final six races of the year. Only two events remain before the playoffs kick in.
"This is exactly why Don Schumacher has been successful with his race teams," said Beckman, who moved into third in the standings after Sonoma and is the 2007 Mile-High champion and 2008 runner-up. "He knows what people to put in the spots to get the most out of his resources and as a driver this is perfect.
"We are absolutely on a roll. There's only been one Funny Car hotter on the Western Swing (Seattle, Sonoma, Denver) and that's our teammate Capps. We've got a semi and a final and we can go one round better than that in Denver.
"I've been to two finals there, I've won there before, and I feel confident about our chances," said Beckman, who holds the top-speed track record at Bandimere of 303.37 mph, set last year. "We have two races before they reset the points for the Countdown. We moved up to third, but we're barely ahead of Matt Hagan, and (No. 1 in points) John Force and (No. 2) Robert Hight are definitely within sight.
"We're only a few rounds behind second place right now (63 points). I really would like to be a top-three car going into the Countdown and, as I said before, in these pre-Countdown races, in my mind, it's all about the trophy.
"We've been getting rounds win. The only thing that we haven't done lately is get the trophy on Sunday. If we can do that in Denver it's going to put us on such a perfect path for that Countdown to the championship."
