MORRISON, Col - Defending Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells lost a tough race in the second round of the Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver, Colorado.
The LeMars, Iowa driver qualified his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" dragster No. 2 with a 5.756/246.35 and defeated Larry Traugott in the first round with a 5.939/241.11 to move into round two.
Unfortunately for Wells, he redlighted by six-thousandths of a second (.394 redlight) in round two, giving the automatic win to his opponent, Bob Perkins. Wells would have won the round running a 6.102/205.29 that easily covered Perkin's problem plagued 6.987/207.98.
Wells said, "I don't know what caused the car to redlight. I staged shallow just so it would not do that. The only thing I can figure is that it didn't spin the tires any on that run, like it normally does, and it made it react quicker. Then on top of that, it exploded the burst panel just past half track, so that's why it slowed down so much."
"We looked at the computer graph from the run, and it looked identical to that 5.75 we ran in qualifying. We were learning more, and I think we could have made it to the finals, and who knows what would have happened then."
The next stop for the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team will be the Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series race in Scribner, Nebraska, August 11-13. Wells will be looking to stop current Division 5 points leader Billy Bybee and make a move towards first place.
"Scribner is a tricky track, we'll have to go back to our normal set up and try to stop Bybee."
