MORRISON, Colo. - Just a few weeks ago, NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver David Wells qualified No. 2 for the Division 5 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver, and went on to win the event. This weekend, at the Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals at Bandimere, Wells has once again qualified in the No. 2 position, and hopes that spot will again take his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" Blown Alcohol Dragster to victory.
Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, ran an elapsed time of 5.703 seconds at 250.37 mph to put him second in the Federal Mogul Dragster field. His speed is currently the highest of the event. In tomorrow's first round, he will face the No. 11 qualifier Brent DuCray. Wells hopes to maintain his solid low 5.70 performance, if not improve.
"We're going to try and step it up a little bit," said Wells. "The track got a little better after the top fuel cars ran, so we're going to move some things around and try to step it up a little bit more, because everyone else is catching up with us. So, to stay ahead of them, we're going to have to step it up."
Tomorrow's first round of eliminations will be ran at 2:30 p.m. Wells expects to see similar conditions to what he saw during today's first qualifying session, where he ran a 5.72.
"It all depends on how the weather is," commented Wells. "I've put together a couple of different transmission gears, and decide which one we're going to use, depending on what the weather is doing. We'll just have to see what happens in the morning."
