MORRISON, Colo. (July 19, 2003) - There is a saying on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series circuit that if you give a crew chief enough runs he will get the track figured out. Johnny West, crew chief of the Henkelman & Baca American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/Skill Clean dragster driven by David Baca, did just that.

In the final qualifying session, Baca, from Brentwood, Calif., covered the Bandimere Speedway quarter-mile in 4.830 seconds as qualifying ended today for the Mopar Mile-High Nationals. The run placed Baca in the fifth position for tomorrow's eliminations.

Said team owner Rick Henkelman, from San Jose, Calif., "Johnny West did a great job. We got a great run in there in that last session. We're really pleased that we could step up there at the last minute and lay a good pass down for the crowd. We might have left a little bit in the tune up on the table and hopefully that gives a good base for tomorrow."

"Wow, what a pass," said Baca. "We ran an 83 (4.83 seconds) and that was
good until the other guys came behind us. We've got something to play
with tomorrow. If we can run like we did today, we'll go late."

The opening round of eliminations begins at 12:30 p.m. (MT - local time) tomorrow. Baca's first round opponent will be Doug Herbert, who qualified 12th with pass of 5.362 seconds at 210.57 mph.
