FUNNY CAR -- ELIMINATIONS

WHIT BAZEMORE, in the all-new '99 KENDALL OIL/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, advanced to the semifinals, first by defeating Dale Creasy, Jr., with the lowest e.t. of that round, 5.182, and the fastest top speed of the weekend up to that point, 296.24 mph. He then eliminated Jerry Toliver with an even quicker e.t., 5.140, at 289.38 mph.

Whit then ousted Scotty Cannon in the semifinal, lowering his e.t. even more, to a 5.139-second pass at 287.96 mph.

RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, defeated Cory Lee in the first round, with the second lowest e.t. of the round, 5.190 at 284.03 mph, but was then eliminated by John Force in the second round in their 15th career matchup, when Capps shut down, slowing to a 7.037-second pass at 131.50 mph.

CAPPS: "Roland (Leong, former crew chief, now team advisor) said it broke an air fitting in the fuel timers . We expected to run close to an .05 or 5 flat. It left great, it got out much further than where they usually get in trouble and have tire shake. It just shook the car and broke the tires loose. I gave it a couple of pedals, looked out the window and Force was pulling away from me. We gave up on that one. It was a good weekend, we made a lot of strides. We will go into Seattle with the new Camaro body. We'll test at Woodburn, Oregon, wtih the new car (body and chassis) and make some runs on the whole new car, just some squirts. The guys are going straight from here to get the new car together, and I'm going to celebrate my daughter's (Taylor) birthday on Sunday. She'll be 3 years old. It's exciting now, having Roland back and Todd (Okuhara, crew chief) is working really well with Roland. We're going to a race where we've always run very good at, and we were very capable of winning here in Denver. Also, from the computer data after this run it sure looked like, if the air fitting hadn't broken, it would have run right with Force or better, which is very encouraging. As much as we have been down the track this weekend it was weird that it suddenly smoked the tires."
