Rookie driver sits outside top 12 after first day on track

MORRISON, Colo. (July 11, 2008) -- Bob Tasca III's first day of qualifying at Bandimere Speedway wasn't exactly what the rookie driver had hoped for. After sitting second heading into the second qualifying run of the day, Tasca experienced issues with his Shelby Mustang Funny Car, and ended the night as one of five drivers currently not qualified for Sunday's race.

"We've run so well this season during the night sessions, that the run really caught me off guard," said Tasca following his second run on Friday. "We dropped a cylinder and it put a hole out. It picked the hole back up, but knocked the tires off. When the motor is that weak that early, the clutch is just too aggressive."

The Rookie-of-the-Year candidate put together a 4.372-second, 283.19 mph run during his the first qualifying run of the weekend and the first run since the NHRA's announcement of racing only to 1,000 feet.

"We got great data on that first run," said the driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane/Custom Accessories Shelby Mustang. "The second run, we know exactly what the car did and we know what to do to adjust for it. The weather will be cooler tomorrow, so I really feel that the top 12 is going to get moved around. At this particular event, I think that there will be plenty of cars that will bump up into the top half of the field tomorrow, which is certainly what we're shooting to do. It's tough out here, but I am very confident about tomorrow."

With 17 Funny Cars entered in this weekend's event, and with only the top 12 drivers currently qualified under this season's new qualifying procedure, Tasca will have two more qualifying runs on Saturday to secure a spot in Sunday's 16-car field.
