Taylor just misses win in round one

SONOMA, Calif. - NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Dennis Taylor and the Cooner Wire team just missed, literally inches, of winning their first round match up against Doug Gordon during this past weekend's Fram-Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Taylor got loose and just crossed half of the centerline, resulting in a disqualification.

Taylor, who runs his racing safety equipment company, Taylor Motorsport Products in Anaheim, Calif., qualified his Randy Goodwin tuned machine 12th with a 5.793 second run at 246.84 mph.

"We missed one session because we spun No. 2 rod bearing on the first run," said Taylor. "That's the second run on that motor and the second time it's done that, so there's something wrong with the crank or block on that motor. It's obviously not the tune-up because the other motor was just fine with the same setup. That kind of set us behind."

"In the first round, we had it jacked up pretty good," Taylor continued. "It went out there and got real loose, and I still couldn't see Doug, so I stayed in it, then it got real close to the line, so I got out of it, then got back on it. When I got back on it, the backend of the car kind of fishtailed and crossed over the centerline. With as tough as the cars are out here, you have to push the envelope, and I guess we pushed it just a little too far."

The next race for the Cooner Wire team will be Sept. 19-21 in Medford, Ore. for the Division 6 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event there.
