Taylor keeps final round streak alive with runner-up
CHANDLER, Ariz. - NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car veteran Dennis Taylor came just one round short of winning his second straight race with a runner-up finish during this past weekend's Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Firebird Raceway just outside of Phoenix. Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts backed team moved into first place in national standings with the runner-up.
Taylor, who runs his racing safety equipment company, Taylor Motorsports Products, in Anaheim, Calif., qualified the Plumbing Concepts Camaro seventh in the field with a 5.869 second run at 245.05 mph. In round one, Taylor shocked the field and Ed Marx with a 5.812 at 246.17 mph in the 'bad' left lane, and then took another win with a 5.821 at 244.12 mph over John Patton in the semifinals.
Taylor would meet up with last year's event winner, Doug Gordon in the final. Taylor went up in smoke just off the line, handing Gordon the easy win.
"We're still pretty stoked to make another final round," stated Taylor. "It was a battle just to qualify out here. To make it to the final from the No. 7 spot just goes to show how hard this team works. My tuner Ora Vasquez and the team are really doing a great job. We're really having a blast, and hope to keep the streak going."
While Taylor currently occupies the No. 1 spot in national points, Taylor is quick to realize it is due to his early success.
"Although I would like to, I know we probably aren't going to run for the World Championship this year," stated Taylor. "We are certainly going to go for the Division 7 Championship and a top ten national finish, but we just don't have enough races on the schedule to go for the national title. Regardless of how we look at it, if we just take it one round at a time, the points will take care of themselves. With the support of Plumbing Concepts and my great associate sponsors Valvoline, Pepsi, Mickey Thompson Tires, Metro Moulded Parts, Shaker Shirts, Ultimate Designs, Bear State Heat and Air, Adam's Polishes and Taylor Motorsport Products, I think many more good things are set to come. So far the year has been Way Cool!"
The next race for the Plumbing Concepts team will be in two weeks for race two of the Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Southwestern International Raceway in Tucson, Ariz. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
