Taylor looking to turn the tide in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Despite having one of his best years of racing this year, NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car ace Dennis Taylor still trails defending Division 7 Champ Doug Gordon going into this weekend's Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. Taylor and his Plumbing Concepts backed team have a runner-up and semifinal finish to their credit this season, but trail Gordon due to his three victories this season.

Taylor, who runs his racing safety equipment company, Taylor Motorsports Products, in Anaheim, Calif., hopes to capitalize on the success they had in Bakersfield last year.

"We qualified No. 1 out here last year, but lost in the semifinals when I got out of shape and took out a cone," said Taylor. "We just need to take it one more round and get a win here this year. We really got to stop that Gordon kid. If we don't do something quick, it's going to be over early. We certainly aren't giving up, but we need to do something quick."

"We got a little behind due to the fact we skipped the Sacramento race," Taylor continued. "We just don't feel it's safe to race there, and we hope NHRA does something about it next year before someone gets hurt. Supposedly Gordon is supposed to skip this weekend because his wife is expecting, but I fully expect to see them pull through the gate."

Despite being behind, Taylor is quick to point out his team will still just take the race one round at a time.

"I'm really fortunate to have a Crew Chief like Ora Vasquez and the great crew I have," commented Taylor. "Ora has so much experience, he's been here before and knows what to do. The crew has great focus, and we have a great sponsor in Plumbing Concepts, and my great associate sponsors Valvoline, Pepsi, Mickey Thompson Tires, Metro Moulded Parts, Shaker Shirts, Ultimate Designs, Bear State Heat and Air, Adam's Polishes and Taylor Motorsport Products. I'm confident we can get the job done and turn the tide on Gordon this weekend."

Qualifying starts on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
