SCRIBNER, Nebr. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver David Wells won the honor of representing Division 5 in the Jegs Sportsman All-Star race with a runner-up finish during this past weekend's Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Scribner, Nebr. Wells also took over the Division 5 points lead from Alan Bradshaw.

Wells, who runs mechanical operations for Blue Bunny Ice Cream, in LeMars, Iowa, qualified his Norm Grimes tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster No. 1 with a 5.613 at 251.60 mph. In round one, he defeated James Thompson with a 5.659 at 250.69 mph, and then Shelly Howard in the semifinals with a 5.649 at 251.74 mph.

In the final, Wells squared off with Division 4 Champion Lee Callaway. The pair stayed locked together all the way down the track, but Wells' 5.705 at 250.48 mph was not enough to catch Callaway's 5.663 at 250.48 mph.

"Things went pretty good this weekend, all except for not winning," said Wells. "We qualified No. 1, and looked to be on track to win. Scribner is a tricky track to get down, so you really have to be careful with the tune-up. We turned a few screws on the tune-up every run to step it up, but in the final, it just spun the tires, slowed down and we got beat. We came out with the All-Star spot and the points lead, so it wasn't too bad a weekend."

The next event for the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team will be this weekend's Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd, Minn.
