Wells shooting to double up in Chicago
JOLIET, Ill. - In what could be called drag racing's equivalent of a double-header, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver David Wells heads will be trying to pull off a double win at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago. Not only will he be competing in this weekend's CarQuest Auto Parts Nationals there, but in the prestigious Jegs Sportsman All-Star event as the Division 5 representative.
This weekend is a pivotal weekend for Wells and the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team. Wells, currently in fourth place nationally, still has a shot at the World Championship, but must win his remaining races this season, including this weekend's race.
"It's just like back in '99 when I had to win out the year divisionally," said Wells. "We just went to work, did our best, and we ended up winning the division championship. This time we are racing for the World Championship. In that regard, we control our own destiny, we need to win races."
"This race is a pretty big race because you have the All-Stars race thrown in there," Wells continued. "So you have to be geared up to make more runs and the whole like. It is supposed to be pretty cool this weekend, and the track is always good at Joliet, so you know the A/Fuel cars will be pretty fast. With as many cars that are entered, it is going to be a tough field, period. I'm sure Norm [Grimes] and the guys will give me a good car to drive, and hopefully I'll do my job, and we'll just take it one run at a time."
Route 66 Raceway has also been a good track for Wells. He won the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event there this year as well as in 2001. Wells hopes to continue that success this weekend.
"We always like coming up here," stated Wells. "The track is always good, so you can usually get after it pretty good. You'll definitely have to get after it this weekend, it's going to be a tough race."
Qualifying begins on Friday. Eliminations for the Jegs Sportsman All-Star event will be held on Saturday, and final eliminations for the event will be held on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
