Ennis, TX (May 27): Tony Schumacher and Team Exide knew they needed to use day two of qualifying for the Castrol Nationals presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts as a test day to prepare for raceday conditions at the Texas Motorplex. Schumacher will start Sunday eliminations from the No. 5 qualifying position.

Schumacher's first attempt of the day produced a tire shaking 7.658 e.t. at 102.81 mph. Most teams also had trouble with the high track temperatures. "With the temperature as high as it is, you have to be right on your tune-up," said Schumacher, "there is no room for any mistakes in your setup today."

Schumacher's last chance to run the Texas Motorplex quarter mile was a solid statement. Schumacher laid down an impressive 4.635 e.t. at 318.80 mph in the heat of the day. It was the quickest of the final session and the second quickest of the day.

"I was in too deep," said Schumacher, "it probably would have run a low .60 and we might have moved up a little. I just messed up."

"Dan (Olson-crew chief) has a handle on this track and the conditions we will see on Sunday. We are ready for tomorrow."

Since there are only 14 Top Fuel dragsters, the NHRA has revised the 16-car format and will run the No.1 qualifier against No. 14, with the winner getting a second round bye. Schumacher will face No. 10, Andrew Cowin, who qualified with a 4.774 e.t..

Final eliminations are scheduled to begin at 10am on Sunday morning. TNN
will broadcast final eliminations. Check local listings for times.
