JOHNSON JR. SITS NINTH WITH TWO SESSIONS REMAINING AT DALLAS

ENNIS, Texas (Oct. 7, 2005) --Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 9 qualifying position Friday at Texas Motorplex after recording a 4.772-second pass.

One week after setting both ends of his career performance marks, the six-time NHRA winner blasted his Mike Green/Johnny West-tuned Chevy flopper to a performance of 4.772 seconds at 323.89 mph on Friday's first qualifying attempt at the storied 20-year-old drag strip. Johnson slowed to a 10-second run on Friday's second pass after his Monte Carlo shook the tires.

"We had a problem in the fuel system on the first pass and still ran 4.77," Johnson said. "It should have been a better run than that. The clutch didn't wear properly and it shook the tires on the night run. The weather will be decent on Saturday, so we should be able to run between a 4.73-4.75 and get into the top half of the field."

The Skoal Racing team aims to move into the top half of the Funny Car field when professional qualifying continues with sessions scheduled for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday afternoon at Texas Motorplex.
