JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES FOURTH FRIDAY AT DALLAS

ENNIS, Texas (Sept. 18, 2006) - Eight-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson, Jr. drove his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the provisional No. 4 qualifying position Friday evening at Texas Motorplex to kick-off qualifying for the 21st annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Nationals.

Under unseasonably warm fall temperatures, Johnson maneuvered his special edition Monte Carlo to a performance of 5.351 seconds at 210.64 mph on Friday's first qualifying attempt when the track temperature at the Motorplex was 122-degrees. Then under the lights on the all-concrete quarter mile strip, the veteran nitro pilot used a tune-up from crew chief Mike Green to power his silver-and-blue flopper to a run of 4.857 at 312.86 to record the fourth quickest Funny Car pass of the day. Johnson qualified 10th at the Dallas race last year.

"It was a good run," Johnson said. "The conditions aren't as good as we're used to here at the (Texas) Motorplex. When you're trying to move up in the points and have a strong finish to the season, you can't afford to smoke the tires. Mike (Green) had a good tune-up in the car and we made a strong run. The car moved around on the top end; it's really windy here, but it was a nice opening-day effort."

Johnson looks to maintain his top-four position when qualifying continues Saturday at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. (CT) at the Billy Meyer-owned facility.
