JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO ROUND-ONE FINISH AT DALLAS

ENNIS, Texas (Oct. 9, 2005) - Six-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Don Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM flopper to a first-round effort Sunday at Texas Motorplex during final eliminations of the 20th annual O'Reilly Fall National! s.

After qualifying his Skoal Racing Chevy in the No. 10 position with a 4.772-second elapsed time, Johnson faced off against 13-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force in the opening round of eliminations. Johnson raced his Monte Carlo to a run of 4.895 seconds at 304.46, while drag racing's most prolific driver powered to a pass of 4.835 at 325.53 to score the narrow win.

"We had a tough weekend getting a handle on the race track," Johnson said. "This time of year, (John) Force is the toughest car and you have to elevate your game. We've come up just a little short against them three times lately. We're still a competitive car. He's always a tough guy to run, but especially at this time of year."

Johnson remains sixth in the NHRA Funny Car standings. The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the fifth annual ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, Oct. 20-23, at the Bruton Smith-owned The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Johnson won at The Strip in 2001.
