Tom Martino completed a solid qualifying effort on Saturday at the Castrol Nationals in Dallas, Texas. In each of his four runs, Martino posted one of the three quickest elapsed times, culminating with his Saturday afternoon pass at 7.011-seconds, with a top speed of 196.50 mph. This placed the CENTURY 21 Pro Stock Firebird 4th on Sunday's final eliminations ladder. Martino will open against thirteenth qualifier V. Gaines, marking the first time these two have met in competition. "We changed some things for the last run, trying to be aggressive, and even though it slowed us down a little bit, it was the third fastest run of the session. If we had set our car up the same way we did in the morning, it probably would have gone 7 flat.

"But the bottom line is we learned something for tomorrow. We knew we wouldn't get bumped out, so we tried something a little different, working on our tune-up. The track gets slick on race day, and we wanted to see what it would handle, so we wouldn't have to worry about being conservative. I can't see why this CENTURY 21 Firebird won't run well all day tomorrow. There are other things involved, including luck, so we might not win, but they will have to beat us tomorrow. We're certainly not going to give it to them."
