PRO STOCK TRUCK -- CHEVY S-10

FINAL ELIMINATIONS -- FINALS

LARRY KOPP, ACCURATE BINDING/ARMA COATINGS/G-FORCE TRANSMISSIONS CHEVY S-10, captured his fifth Pro Stock Truck title of the inaugural season of the NHRA category, collecting all the points available to him (138, for national e.t. record, No. 1 qualifier and event winner). He needs only to enter and qualify at the final race in Pomona, Calif., to become the first Pro Stock Truck Winston Champion.

Kopp defeated JERRY HAAS, CHEVY TRUCKS CHEVY S-10, in the final, with a 7.654-second pass at 174.85 mph to Haas' 7.729/173.24. Kopp had a slower reaction time to Haas (.514 to .494) but was still first at the finish line by .055 of a second

KOPP: "We came here with the same attitude we had all year, we are good, we are fast and we can win. As long as I do my job we can win. And I haven't been doing my job for the llast few races. This will redeem me. I'm not taking it lightly."

ON TRACK CONDITIONS:

"The track was sometimes marginal, most of the time it was fine. We had problems on one run getting down it, and we adjusted for it. Sometimes when (the problem) is downtrack you can't adjust for it. When you run into that problem you have to deal with it when you get there. The NHRA do everythng they can do to give us a good, safe race track. It turned out safe for me."

ON THE SLOW REACTION TIME:

"It was my worst. It was not a mistake, and I have no excuses. I have driven at night time maybe three times in 20 years. Nighttime racing is different. I had good lights all weekend, I had no reason not to try for the same light."

ON THAT RUN AGAINST HAAS:

"When I got into fourth gear I knew I was ahead of him. I knew as long as I got into fifth gear and made it down th track I was going to win. I just really want to thank Stevie Johns, Terry Adams, Jim Brinegar, Rick Roth, my wife Susan for everything they've been doing with this S-10. It's just been spectacular getting this truck down the track. They make all the calls on the tune-up of this thing." I also want to thank my new associate sponsor, Key Auto Parts."

Note: This was Jerry Haas' third final round appearance this year, with no wins.

HAAS: "We didn't have any power. This motor has been hurt since Indy and we haven't seen good performance out of it since then. We just drove our butt off all weekend. The crew did an excellent job tuning the Chevy S-10 and I focused on driving the truck. I think my ability to get the truck down the track helped a little bit on the far end. A couple of times when I thought I would get beat I was lucky. Maybe they did a better job cleaning my lane than their lane. In the final round against Larry we had the right lane. We ran behind the Super Stockers, so the track was real good. When we got back the computer said we did a perfect run. That's all there was, there was no more. When you run a 7.72 (elapsed time) to a guy who runs a 7.65, you can't outrun him. We need to get the motor repaired. This one's been wounded since and it's been patched. You can't race with a patched engine. My crew guys Bob Shawcross and Jeff Lawson are doing a good job; that's the reason the engine stays together."

ON THREE TIMES IN THE FINAL, BUT NO WINS:

"Being in the final three times this year is not bad. We just can't quite get a hold of that little Oscar. If we had some more 'poop' (in the motor) we could do it. You can't just keep making perfect runs, you have to have an ace in the hole to play with."

Note: Haas' chassis-building operation constructed 16 of the 34 trucks that competed here, 12 of them Chevy S-10s. All the Chevys in the final four today were built by Jerry Haas. With this new category growing in popularity, 1999 should see stellar fields of Pro Stock Trucks. Haas already has 10 more on order.
