Texas heat? Langdon says bring it on

DALLAS (Sept. 20) -- Sophomore Top Fuel drag racer Shawn Langdon may be new to the nitro world, but his experience at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas has him praying for heat at this weekend's 25th annual O'Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals.

"I've run Dallas quite a bit with my various sportsman cars," said Langdon, a two-time world champion in Super Comp that has scored a pair of sportsman victories this year when pulling double-duty with his dragster. "I've won a divisional race there, but never a national event. I've been close many times so maybe our turn is coming this weekend.

"To be honest, although it's no fun sweating it out in a big, thick fire suit, I hope it's really hot this weekend. We tend to run better at the trickier racetracks and when it's hot at the Motorplex the groove down that all-concrete strip gets real narrow. It becomes a driver's race and I like those. Plus, the high-horsepower teams are forced to de-tune a little bit so the playing field is leveled. It's definitely a track that can play into our favor."

A strong semifinal showing in the first of six playoff races a few weeks ago in Indianapolis had Langdon's Lucas Oil/Speedco-sponsored race team dreaming big as they rose to a season-high fourth in the points. But the group quickly came back to earth when a mechanical malfunction in the opening round of last Sunday's national event in Charlotte cost them the race and three positions in the rankings.

"It's going take us a day or two to get over what happened in Charlotte," Langdon said. "We'll get past it; it's not the end of the world and we have four more races. Our championship hopes were hurt pretty bad, but I think we can still finish the year in the top five. That will be a solid year for our team.

"We'd really like to win a race. We've been so close with this car and what's cool is my team was right there with me the two times I won in sportsman action this year so it's like we can taste it and feel it. I want to get it done for these guys."
