White loses close matchup in round two
ENNIS, Texas - NHRA Federal Mogul Funny Car pilot Marc White lost a close matchup with Bob Newberry in the quarterfinals of this past weekend's O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas. White feels that he did not have the Etterman Racing 2001 Firebird set up aggressive enough for the all-concrete racing surface of the Texas Motorplex, which boasted one of the toughest Federal Mogul Funny Car fields of the year.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., qualified fifth in the sixteen car field with a 5.740 at 250.90 mph. In round one, he took out Scott Palmer with a 5.720 at 250.41 mph. In his matchup with Newberry, White gained the starting line advantage, but couldn't hold off Newberry's 5.700 at with his own 5.75 at 248.27 mph.
"We just got behind a little bit early on in that race," said White. "We never really caught up to the racetrack. We weren't aggressive enough, and the track came around and got better on that day than it was the day before. We didn't compensate for it, the car slowed down, and we got beat."
White feels that the early round exit will not effect them at their next race, the final Division 7 event in two weeks to be held at "The Strip" in Las Vegas. There White and the Etterman Racing Team will be trying to make the final round and clinch the Division 3 Funny Car Championship.
"We will go into Vegas being a whole lot more aggressive with the way we look at things than the way we have been," commented White. "That may bite us, or it may be the thing we need to do. Time will tell. We will go in there, do the best we can do, the cards will fall where they may, and we will be either the No. 1 or 2 car in the division Sunday night. We will try as hard as we can."
