ENNIS, Texas. (Sept. 24, 2004) - Larry Dixon powered his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 6 qualifying position Friday evening after recording a pass of 4.625 seconds at 316.38 mph under the lights at the Texas Motorplex.

The two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion opened qualifying at the Dallas-area track with a performance of 4.674 at 308.07 on a hot race track. Later in the evening, Dixon used a tune-up from champion crew chief Dick LaHaie to improve his time with the 4.625, 316.38 run, placing him sixth in the Top Fuel order. The 35-time NHRA winner claimed the event title at the O'Reilly Fall Nationals in 2001.

"I'm pretty happy with the way things went on Friday," Dixon said. "We had a few minor problems. We lost a spark plug on the first pass and shook the tires on the second run. That probably cost us about three hundredths (of-a-second) on both passes. So, if we would have run a 4.64 and a 4.59, we'd be in good shape."

Dixon aims to advance in the Top Fuel order when qualifying resumes Saturday with sessions at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. (CT) at the Billy Meyer-owned track.

ESPN2 will broadcast two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Fall Nationals at 4 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Sept. 25 and show two hours of final eliminations coverage at 11 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Sept. 26.
