Stoffer the top qualifier in Dallas through Friday's action
DALLAS (Sept. 24) -- Karen Stoffer and the GEICO Powersports Suzuki aren't ready for summer to end any time soon.
After running solidly in steamy conditions at zMax Dragway in Charlotte last week, Stoffer raced to the provisional No. 1 qualifier in sweltering conditions at Texas Motorplex Friday during the 25th annual O'Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals.
"The boys hit the tune-up right off the bat," Stoffer said. "It's going to be a little warmer and a different time of day when we run again tomorrow, but it felt like the bike had a lot left so maybe we can improve.
"We've been getting the bike going straight lately and it's a relief to get the bike back in the No. 1 spot. We haven't been No. 1 since the beginning of the year. It was a huge reward to get down the track and get down it fast."
Stoffer had a best pass of 6.953 seconds at 192.41 mph.
"It was hot and slippery when we went out there -- 134 degrees track temperatures," Stoffer said. "I don't know if the time will hold. I think teams are trying to figure out what to do to get quicker. I do know the GEICO Powersports bike is going to try to go quicker. There's still a lot left in it."
If the time holds it would be Stoffer's second No. 1 of the year and third of her career.
"We tried something on our second pass and it didn't work," Stoffer said. "Tomorrow we'll try something going back the other way. It's supposed to be the same conditions, so I'm confident we'll get the GEICO Powersports bike down into the 6-second range again."
