ENNIS TX - SUMMIT FastNews - Sunday started off badly, a one-hour rain delay with eliminations barely begun, but once racing at the 3rd annual NHRA Castrol Nationals presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts resumed there were no further interruptions and the competition lived up to the reputation of the Texas Motorplex. By day's end, Gary Scelzi, Tony Pedregon, Warren Johnson, and Antron Brown stood atop the platform in the winners' circle. Scelzi, rebounding from three successive first-round losses and a "did-not-qualify," worked his way through a tough field to and set low elapsed time of the event at 4.528 seconds to get to the finals, where he faced Doug Kalitta. Their race was as good as it gets, both cars leaving the starting line on time and running side-by-side all the way to the finish line, the margin less than a car length. Scelzi's 4.563-second, 319.60 mph effort earned the win light over Kalitta's 4.588 at 318.02. In Funny Car, Pedregon withstood not only the usual pressures of racing tough competition, but also a semifinals race against his brother Cruz with the $100,000 Winston No Bull Challenge at stake. Tony's race against Cruz was a matter of thousandths of a second, earning him the right to face Dean Skuza in the final round. In the finals, Skuza smoked the tires, handing Pedregon the event win and the hefty bonus, though Pedregon's 4.982 at 309.70 mph would likely have been enough for the win. The win was Pedregon's second of the year.

In Pro Stock, Johnson faced Mike Edwards. Edwards was slightly quicker off the line, but Johnson used his superior performance, running 6.945 at 199.85 to Edwards' 7.002 at 196.72. The win was Johnson's second of the year, raising his career total to 74, one more than John Force, making Johnson the winningest active driver in NHRA competition. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Brown, in just his first NHRA final round, defeated number-one qualifier Angelle Seeling when Seeling redlighted. In other final rounds: Shawn Bowen defeated Darryl Hitchman in Federal-Mogul Dragster; Todd Paton defeated Todd Simpson in Federal-Mogul Funny Car; Doug Stewart defeated Maryann Austin in Competition Eliminator; Terry Emmons defeated Bob Dennis in Super Stock; F.J. Acosta defeated Jimmie Hutto in Stock; Edmond Richardson defeated Paul Buell in Super Comp; Gary Risk defeated Mitch Truman in Super Gas.
