JOHNSON'S STREAK ENDS AT 66 IN DISAPPOINTING FASHION

Commerce, GA (May 1, 2007) -- For the first time since May 22, 2004, Tommy Johnson Jr. failed to qualify for Sunday's final session, ending a near three-year streak of 66 consecutive races, longest on the NHRA Funny Car circuit.

Johnson Jr. and the SKOAL Racing Chevrolet Impala started the weekend out strong running in eighth place after Friday's first qualifying round. However, Johnson Jr. found himself playing catch-up after finishing the evening sitting in the 18th position. His final qualifying run on Saturday resulted in a 4.84, but was not fast enough to crack the top 16.

"Obviously we are very disappointed as a team with our efforts this past weekend in Atlanta," said Johnson Jr. "We just have to put this performance behind us, move on and get ready for the O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals this coming weekend."

The final featured the top two qualifiers, Mike Ashley and Robert Hight. Ashley and Hight were side-by-side most of the way down the track until Ashley's Dodge spun it's tires around 1,000 feet. Hight crossed the finish line in 4.882 at 314.61 mph, winning the Funny Car Division at the 27th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals.
