A GREMLIN STRIKES SHAUN CARLSON IN ATLANTA QUALIFYING

COMMERCE, Ga. (May 6, 2006) - Pro Stock Rookie Shaun Carlson felt great heading into this weekend's Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, following a strong test session at this track 12 days ago.

A mechanical problem, however, struck at the worst time. After qualifying No. 16 in the first qualifying session (6.785/202.67), Carlson fell out of the field in the next two rounds (6.781/202.85 and 6.828/203.31) and was looking to redeem himself in the final attempt. Unfortunately, Carlson was unable to make that pass when the Team Mopar/SRT Dodge Stratus R/T lost electrical power in the staging lanes, resulting in a DNQ.

"It's frustrating to lose that chance to qualify in the final round. It's one thing when you lose a run after 60 or 100 feet, but to not even be able to get the engine started is extremely frustrating to say the least.

"We had everything together and I think we were going to make a good run. The car started up in the pit, but when we got up to the line it wouldn't turn over."

David Nickens, crew chief of both Don Schumacher Racing Pro Stock teams, is addressing the problems. "We're going to take Shaun's car and have some work done to it, and see what we can do to get it straightened out," he said.

"We'll also do what we have to do to get Richie's and Shaun's cars running better," he offered of how the team will spend the one-week break before the NHRA Nationals at National Trail Raceway (Columbus, Ohio), May 18-21.
