Capps Makes Quickest Run of The Weekend in First Round Defeat at Atlanta
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 16, 2004) 0x2022 Despite struggling during qualifying, Ron Capps and green Skoal RacingSM crew made an impressive showing Sunday at Atlanta Dragway following a long night at the race track even though the 14-time NHRA winner was defeated in round one.
After struggling with the tune-up in the early part of the 2004 NHRA season, crew chiefs John Stewart, Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler felt it would benefit Capps' car if they ran a similar setup to that of Tommy Johnson's blue Skoal Racing Funny Car.
The changes paid off as Capps posted his quickest run of the weekend, stopping the clocks with his Skoal Racing flopper in 4.945 seconds at 265.33 mph. However, No. 2 qualifier Whit Bazmore powered his Dodge Funny Car to a run of 4.865 at 316.97 to take the slight victory over Capps.
"Considering all the changes we made Saturday after qualifying ended, we had a very respectable showing," Capps said. "Mike Green and the blue Skoal Racing crew have been running really well, so we decided to take advantage of what they're doing and setup our green car like Tommy's (Johnson Jr.). The car responded well with all the changes that we made.
"It was nice to see the car run so well on the first pass with the new setup. I didn't see Whit (Bazemore) until half-track. So, things are very encouraging. We're going to stay and test here at Atlanta on Monday before going to Joliet (Ill.)."
The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the seventh annual Route 66 NHRA Nationals, May 20-23, at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.
