Larry Dixon hopes to repeat history in the no.5 qualifying spot at Southern Nationals.

ATLANTA, GA. (May 3) -With Friday's qualifying sessions cut short due to rain, defending NHRA POWERade Champ Larry Dixon the Miller Lite Dragster made the most of their two Saturday qualifying sessions as they ran a lap of 4.578 seconds (321.96mph) securing the No.5 qualifying position.

Dixon first pass of the day resulted in a lap of 4.573 seconds (323.35mph) here at the 23rd Annual Mac Tools Thunder Valley Nationals. The Don Prudhomme Snake Racing team hopes history will repeat itself this weekend; last year Dixon qualified No.5 and went on to clench the Southern Nationals title.

Unlike yesterday, today the weather provided for some excellent racing conditions. "I don't think it had any effect (the rain) on the track, we saw some phenomenal runs today as opposed to yesterday," said Dixon.

Put simply, said Dixon, "You've got to be in to win. And we're in."

Dixon will take on No.12 qualifier Mike Smith in Sunday's opening round which is scheduled for an 11AM ET start. Dixon owns a 3-0 record over Mike Smith.

Catch ESPN2 tomorrow Sunday May 4th for final eliminations airing at 4:30PM (ET).
