SCELZI DQ'd IN SECOND ROUND IN ATLANTA
COMMERCE, Ga. (May 7, 2006) - No. 5 qualifier Gary Scelzi was rolling right along in eliminations at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway today. The driver of the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger Funny Car first overpowered Scott Kalitta in the opening stanza with a 4.709-second elapsed time at 326.40 mph. Then, in what would have been an easy second-round victory against Eric Medlen's wounded car, Scelzi crossed the centerline and was disqualified.
Although Medlen never made it to the finish line, he was awarded the win, despite stalling half-way down the quarter-mile.
"The Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger was hauling ass," said the reigning NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion. "It's acting like it's supposed to act. We had the race won, and it just went out there and it started to drive to the left. I brought it back, then it made a BIG move left, and I went full-lock right, and when I knew it wasn't coming back I shut it off and the car still floated over there and would not come off the centerline. I mean, full-right lock. That's what these Funny Cars do. They won't come back and I went just a split tenth of a second probably too long, because normally it will drive back around, and it just didn't want any part of it. It clipped the cone and we gave Eric Medlen a ride to the semis. It's very disheartening."
Scelzi is 11th in the Funny Car point standings, with 293.
Next on the schedule is the NHRA Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, May 19-21.
