McClenathan consistent during qualifying -- Finishes 4th

COMMERCE, Ga. (May 3, 2003) -- Cory McClenathan, driver of Darrell Gwynn Racing's New York Yankees/Berryman Products Top Fuel Dragster, tuned up for tomorrow's elimination rounds by running three consistent qualifying passes at the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway..

On Friday and Saturday, McClenathan, the veteran driver from Riverside, Calif., reeled off elapsed times of 4.607, 4.569 and 4.596 seconds. His pass of 4.569 seconds at 324.83 during Saturday's early session was good for the fourth qualifying position. He will face the # 14 qualifier John Smith in Sunday's opening stanza.

"I'm real happy to have three consistent runs," said McClenathan. "We came out of the trailer on Friday and ran a 60 (4.60 seconds). The rains came later in the day and drown out any chance at a second run. The guys on this New York Yankees/Berryman Products team are doing a good job and they're the ones responsible for the consistency. It would be nice to go out and run mid-50s (4.50) all day tomorrow but it's going to take it a little bit lower time than that to win this thing. I think we'll be up to the task. We'll start slow and easy and then build each round. We won't take any round lightly."

This will be the first meeting between McClenathan and Smith in 2003. Over their careers the pair have met nine times with Cory Mac taking the win light six times.
