Columbus, OH, June 11, 2004 - Rain showers took over the Central-Ohio area for most of the day, but the clouds finally broke during the late afternoon and qualifying began for the Pontiac Excitement Nationals at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio. Defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon drove the Quaker State Chevrolet Monte Carlo to an elapsed time of 5.005 seconds at 248.29 mph to qualify 11th after two sessions.

"The car was on a good run in that first session," said Pedregon. "It was on a mid-4.80 run until it got to about the 1000-foot mark and it lost a blower belt.

"During the second session we just had to much tire spin which caused the slower time," added Pedregon. "That's why we get four qualifying runs though. We can come back tomorrow and get after it again."

Two more qualifying sessions are scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (ET). Final eliminations will begin at 11:00 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.

ESPN2 will televise one hour of qualifying coverage of the NHRA Nationals on Saturday, June 12th from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (ET). Three hours of final eliminations will air on Sunday, June 13th on ESPN2 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (ET).
