Columbus, OH, June 13, 2004 -- Defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon suffered a first round loss today during final eliminations for the Pontiac Excitement Nationals at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio.

Coming into today's eliminator, Pedregon qualified the Quaker State Chevrolet Monte Carlo eighth with an elapsed time of 4.837 seconds 317.87 mph. He faced Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations today but the car experienced tire spin early in the run and slowed to an elapsed time of 8.499 seconds at 99.09 mph to Worsham's elapsed time of 4.909 seconds at 305.01 mph.

"We were just a little too weak in our setup," explained Pedregon. "We've had our share of problems this weekend with tire spin and the car just not wanting to move, but we'll bounce back and be ready to go next week. I have confidence in Dickie (Venables), Kurt (Elliott) and the entire crew that they'll get it figured out. The good thing about these back-to-back races is we don't have to wait very long to get back on the track.

"What's really going to help us is Cruz's car is running much better and we'll be able to look at their data more," added Pedregon. "Two times the information is better than one, so we'll get it all straightened out, and look to improve on our performance in Englishtown."

Pedregon remains ninth in the NHRA POWERade Funny Car points standings.

The next event for the Quaker State racing team will be the NHRA Nationals in Englishtown, NJ at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park on June 17 -- 20th.
