COLUMBUS, Ohio (June 13) -- A successful weekend of drag racing at the 35th Annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals ended in the quarterfinals for Pennzoil driver Mike Thomas when he gave away a win to Mike Trumble Jr. at the starting line. Thomas covered the quarter mile quicker than his rival with a 7.080-second pass at 196.33 mph compared to Trumble's 7.094-second, 196.36 mph lap, but lost at the tree when he took 0.516 seconds to react to the lights against Trumble's 0.463-second launch.

"I just wasn't focused on the light," Thomas said. "Mike and I had run very similar times in the first round (7.051 and 7.052) and I was hoping to get an advantage this time around with a better start. I had Rick (Hickman, crew chief) aim me a little bit to the left where we thought we saw some extra rubber and I was thinking about that when the lights when on. It's my fault.

"Still, I'm very encouraged by this weekend. We definitely gained some ground in the points and the car is getting stronger and stronger every event. We're going to get back into the points chase one step at a time and we took a nice big step this weekend."

Thomas entered this event in 15th place in the Winston championship points standings. He has qualified for eight races and has recorded four elimination round wins.
