Don Smith looks forward to St. Louis

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sunday June 17) - Don Smith, driver of the Texas Harley-Davidson Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, enter eliminations at the 37th Annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals in the second position on the eliminations ladder.

Smith's opponent in the first round was Vinny Barone. Smith's truck launched hard but as he shifted into the next gear the transmission broke giving Barone the win. Barone ran a 7.588 / 176.93 mph to defeat the breaking Smith with a 15.548 / 70.32 mph.

"Second gear broke," said Smith of Keller, Texas, 'but that's what drag racing is all about. Some times you win these races on a break, and sometimes you lose that way.

"It's to bad that we didn't go farther today. We feel like we have finally have the tune-up on this truck where we want it to be. We feel like we have everything right: the roll out, the jetting, the timing, all of it. So we are disappointed that we didn't get to see what the truck would do.

"I believe we could have gone farther if we didn't break. The truck left hard and we had the best 60 foot time we have had all year. The good news is that we know what we have to do in St. Louis.

"We will go to St. Louis and give it another try."

The next stop for the Pro Stock Trucks will be the 5th Annual Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals in Madison, Ill. June 21 - 24.
