HEBRON, Ohio, (June 11, 2004) -- At the end of the first of two days of qualifying for the NHRA Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment, Matt Smith, from King N.C., was in the No. 15 position.

Smith assumed the riding duties on the Red Line Oil-, Snap on Tools-backed Star Racing/G Squared Motorsports Suzuki when Fred Collis moved to the inaugural competition of the long-awaited G Squared/S&S Cycle Buell, powered by an S&S Cycle V-Twin. He ran a 7.349-second pass at 180.52 mph in the opening session. This was good for 10th at the time.

Session two on Friday was only the second time that Smith had been aboard the Star Racing/G Squared Motorsports Suzuki. The 31-year-old rider did not improve in the second session when he had trouble shifting due to being unfamiliar with the new bike.

"Matt will continue to improve as he gets more seat time on the Suzuki," said George Bryce, owner of Star Racing and partner in G Squared Motorsports. "For only his first time on the bike he did a good job and is in the field. Tomorrow we'll try to give him a tune up that will enable him to move up the qualifying ladder."

The Pontiac Excitement Nationals has two final qualifying sessions on Saturday (June 12) at 11 and 2:30 p.m. Final eliminations for all classes get underway on Sunday at 11 a.m. All times is Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Subject to change, same-day television coverage can be seen on ESPN with qualifying highlights on Saturday (June 12) from 7-8 p.m. Eliminations will air on ESPN2 on Sunday (June 13) from 3-6 p.m. All times is Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
