Sitting 15th at qualifying midpoint, Martino looks to move up on Saturday in Columbus

Date: Friday, June 15, 2001
Location: National Trail Raceway, Kirkersville, OH

After being forced to shut off early on his first attempt, Tom Martino entered Friday's second qualifying session of the Pontiac Excitement Nationals with two goals - to run quick enough to place the CENTURY 21 Grand Am among the top sixteen required to qualify and to gain valuable tuning information in order to improve even further during his final two runs on Saturday. Running early in a session that was threatened by rain, Martino accomplished both, as his solid 7.038-second, 196.90-mph pass not only placed him 15th, but gave him valuable data on both his Don Ness chassis and the tricky National Trail Raceway surface.

"Running earlier in the session, we may not have had the cooler temperatures that some of the later competitors experienced, but we're satisfied with the run. Naturally, 15th is not where we want to be, but it is a starting point, and gives us something to use for tomorrow. The front that is supposed to move in tonight should produce much more favorable conditions, so the qualifying order could get scrambled. We're still trying to learn the finer points of this newer CENTURY 21 Grand Am, and tonight's run could go a long way towards helping us move up on Saturday."
