White shooting to better last year's Columbus success.

KIRKERSVILLE, Ohio - For the past three seasons, NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Marc White has made the final round of the Sportsman All-Star event traditionally held at National Trail Raceway just outside of Columbus, Ohio. This year, with the Jeg's Sportsman All-Star race having moved to Chicago, White and the Etterman Racing Team will have their full focus on keeping their final round streak alive for this weekend's Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing. Except this time, instead of a runner-up, the team is shooting for a win in Columbus.

White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., hopes to be able to apply the same hot weather tune-up that brought him success last year in June. After making the finals of the All-Star event, he made the semifinals of last year's Pontiac Excitement Nationals and then went on to win the Sears Craftsman Nationals in St. Louis later that month. A few weeks later, he won the Division 3 event in Columbus in July.

"We have ran pretty good here the last few years," said White. "We feel like we have a pretty decent tune-up for this track. We'll just have to go out there see what the track will give us."

With cooler than normal weather conditions forecasted for this weekend, this weekend's event may hold more in store than is usually expected during the hot months of summer.

"It's usually hot and muggy with a marginal track in Columbus," stated White. "It's been pretty cool up in this part of the country, though, so we'll have to play it by ear. It may just end up being a fast event."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions, followed by one final session Saturday morning. First round of eliminations will start Saturday afternoon, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
